We should be harboring honor, respect, and obedience to our God given parents.  Even if they are not everything God would like them to be.  They were enough, for God to give them us, instead of giving us to another set of parents.

Honor :  respectful conduct towards someone to put them in the best possible light in the sight of others, to glorify any good and to neglect and cover the negative in a respectful way, even to protect and supply any need within our power. We have dummied down the meaning of Honor today, in 1828 it would be more like Reverence and Submission to upholding a person's reputation, to put it a little stronger; To dignify to a level which is not merited, but position justifies, in God's sight.

Respect:  to always give care and recognition of worth because of one's position not to demean or degrade to others, regardless of their personal failures.

Honor and Respect to parents is based on the position God has placed them in as the giver of physical life to their child.  This fact will never change, which is the minimal base of honor and respect every parent is entitled.  A parent is also entitled to obedience from the dependent child as to any thing which is not CLEARLY in direct contradiction to the word of God. The child should be careful to note that preference, option, life-style, and man-made church doctrines which are not CLEARLY "the commandment of God" are subject to parental discretion even if that thinking seems to project towards the world's ways. Also the Bible does not give any exact age that a child is freed from parental authority.  This age was at marriage for a woman when her father would transfer his authority over his daughter to, her new HEAD, her husband.  Likewise a man which takes a wife becomes "head" in his own home.  A boy became a man in the O.T.  at age 20, but responsibility for parents in old age never ended, yet it seems Christ did not leave home to begin his public ministry until age 30 as the example for a single man, Joseph assumed dead.  The priests were not allowed to do temple service until age 25, and they were trained for the priesthood, could it be anyone below age 25 is considered a novice? Christ though dying on the Cross, being the oldest son, still thought of his earthly responsibilities and HE transferred his eldest son's responsibility for his mother's care to the Apostle John, "Woman, behold thy son!"  and "Behold thy mother!"  "And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home."  John 19:26&27 Should parents become financially dependent upon their children it seems the children become responsible for their parents just an any of their other dependents (yet they are required to HONOR the parents until their death). Such is how God has ordained family authority and responsibility. Proverb 23:22 "Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old."

Obedience: is spoken of in Heb.12:9 even to give our earthly father "reverence", Deut.21:18-21 judgment of adult/married sons was within the power of his father and mother, in fact God judged Eli for not exercising this authority 1 Samuel 3:13, so the authority of a Father goes much further than we expect and respect today, let us beware least our God judge us as parents and children alike.

For those thinking marriage is the end of honor and respect towards parents.  We don't call our spouses parents, Father-in-law and Mother-in-law for nothing, do we?  Moses was a great and powerful man with God, yet the man that lead the children of Israel out of Egypt bowed himself to his Father-in-law doing "obeisance".  Exodus 18:7  If you haven't yet parted the watered or called down manna perhaps you should consider honoring your In-laws as your own Father and Mother with Honor .  And as for when we out grow that honor in our own homes consider the Rechabites.  Jeremiah 35:18
